The 2018 Bartlesville District Science Fair, hosted at the Phillips 66 Research Center on February 23-24, gathered around 300 students from Bartlesville and vicinities. Our participation in the science fair is an excellent way to help students develop an understanding of the scientific process along with strengthening their communication skills.
The Northern Oklahoma section of the ACS presented awards to students in all three divisions:

We are seeking judges for the 2018 Bartlesville District Science Fair (BDSF)!
The 2018 BDSF will be hosted at the Phillips 66 Research Center on Friday evening, February 23 (Elementary Division), and Saturday morning, February 24 (Junior/Senior Division). We ask that judges arrive at the Research Forum Lecture Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 7:45 a.m. on Saturday. This year NOKACS have set up the NOKACS Science Grant. The grant will be administered through with the Bartlesville Public Schools Foundation (BPSF) to support chemistry-based initiatives at Bartlesville public schools. Grants are awarded to projects that enhance the science instruction in a classroom and make science more engaging to the students. This year we received 5 grant requests and approved 3. Following the local ACS election closed at the end of November, the opened positions; Chair-Elect and Secretary, were filled up by Chad Ellis and Raj Kailasam, respectively. They joined the rest of the team that includes Tom Upshaw (Treasurer), Mazi Sardashti (Councilor) and Joe Allison (Alternate Councilor). The new elected 2018 Northern Oklahoma ACS Executive Committee will be led by Matt Lundwall. Congratulations!

Thanks to the willingness and dedication of more than 70 volunteers from Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, and Chevron Phillips companies, retirees and high school students, this year National Chemistry Week (NCW) was again a big success. From October 23rd to November 3rd, the 19 teams of volunteers visited 13 elementary schools from Bartlesville and surrounding areas and shared their knowledge and experience with more than 1350 students.

Dr. Paul Philp, Professor of Petroleum Geochemistry at the University of Oklahoma, gave an engaging seminar on hydraulic fracturing at the Tri County Technology Center on Oct 3rd. More than 60 local students and members of the community attended the seminar and enjoyed the pizza dinner. The seminar covered historical perspectives on hydraulic fracturing and common “talking points” discussed by both sides of the contentious subject.
